What is included in the price?
Your car rental rate takes into consideration all mandatory charges according to your reservation. This rate normally includes:
- 24% Local VAT
- Unlimited mileage/km
- Airport surcharge if applicapable
- One-way charge if applicapable
- PAI (Personal Accident Insurance)
- Third party liability insurance
- Collision Damage Waiver (“CDW”)
In case of damage to or theft of the vehicle, the CDW deductible specifies the maximum amount of money you are liable for. This deductible may be reduced by purchasing Super Collision Damage Waiver at time of reservation or during pick-up.
Are there any mandatory additional taxes or surcharges?
Your rental rate takes into consideration all charges according to your reservation. You can consult these charges on the reservation confirmation. The rates are guaranteed to the confirmed booking. Only specific mandatory charges for instance Airport, Ecological surcharges (when excluded from the product) and country governmental taxes may vary until the renting period.
If I have not done a reservation, can I check rates?
Yes, you can request a rental quotation and check vehicle availability. Just fill in the entry page on our website and click on “Select a Vehicle”. If you want to make a reservation at this time, continue by clicking on “Book Now”.
How will I know that my reservation is confirmed?
When you finish the reservation process we will send you a “Reservation Confirmation” page with the reservation number specified. In addition, we will send you a confirmation e-mail including the details of your reservation within 24 hours. Please, print these and keep them for your information.
Could I modify / cancel my reservation after it is confirmed?
Yes, we permit you to modify or cancel your reservation after it is confirmed, see detailed information under Terms and Agreement. Send us an email and our sales representative will help you. If you made your reservation by a Travel Agency, please contact the pertinent agent to make any change. We will send you a confirmation of amendment or cancellation by e-mail. Please, print these and keep them for your information.
Can I book extras or equipment?
Yes, you can book online additional extras which involve extra cost and are subject to availability.
Are my personal and credit card information protected during the transaction?
In order to guarantee the safety of a transaction, our system uses SSL (Secure Socket Layer), which works by encrypting all data between your computer and our server and, consequently, the information cannot be intercepted.
How is my rental rate calculated?
We calculate your rental in accordance with the information provided at time of booking, along with any selected extras. At the pick-up time, our counter agents will check all charges with you in order to confirm that you are agree with the total charges.
I would like to know the amounts of deductibles, and how I will be charged in case of damages
Depends on the vehicle category, deductibles will vary. Our employees in the Reservations Department or at the counter will give you information as regards the deductible corresponding to the vehicle category you want to rent. If we observe a new damage when the vehicle is returned, you will be charged the corresponding amount and as long as the final repair cost (including any applicable administration or immobeilisation charges) is lower than the deductible charged, the difference will be reimbursed. If we recover the costs of its damage from a liable Third Party, you will be fully reimbursed.
Where are the car rental offices?
We have an office in the international airport at Keflavik and another one in Reykjavik.
Do you offer transport service?
Yes, we pick you up from your hotel or guesthouse free of charge within city limits at all of our locations.
In a certain office, how can I check what vehicles are available?
All the vehicles available at a certain office are visualized, in accordance with their immediate confirmation, in the Reservation screen in our web. However, some car groups and/or extras can´t be booked within 48h.
Do you confirm the vehicle I want?
Your chosen car is instantly confirmed (only the category) if it is in the booking part. Note that we only guarantee the category reserved and not the model.
Rental process information
Can I purchase additional covers or protections?
Yes, at the beginning of your rental you can purchase additional covers at our counter.
Is it necessary to check the condition of the vehicle before starting the rental?
Yes, you have to check that the vehicle condition report indicates the actual conditions. If you observe any defect which is not listed, please examine the vehicle with our employee so as to update the rental agreement.
Could I use my credit card coverage?
Yes, we accept credit cards that provide a degree of cover for damage to, or loss of, the rental vehicle to their holders. In this case, the holder do not avail himself of the protections mentioned above and be liable for any damage to, or loss of, our vehicle.
Please be aware of the following:
- If you choose to be covered by your card and decline our protections, you are also declining the recovery service from liable third parties.
- The extent of coverage provided by credit cards differs and is normally subject to certain restrictions, especially regarding the maximum length of rental and the type of vehicle which can be covered.
- We recommend you contact your Credit Card company before rental and provide details/proof of your coverage when arriving at the at the rental office.
What documents do I need to present at the counter when I pick up my car?
You will need to present to our customer representative:
- A valid driving license, issued by your country of residence (N.B. For license holders from the UK, where the driving license is issued in 2 parts, both parts of the license need to be presented) and held for at least 12 moths. Note that your International Driving License is valid only if accompanied by your normal Driving License.
- In agreement with Icelandic law for car rentals, your passport will also be required.
- Your valid credit card with an expiry date after the scheduled check-in date. When you pay with a prepaid voucher (with a specified value or the mention ‘Group & Days apply’), you must also present a credit card for those charges which have not been prepaid (such as extras, refueling charge, deductibles in case of damage to or loss of the rented vehicle). We accept all main credit cards.
If my driving license has been stolen, can I present a theft declaration instead?
Under certain restrictive conditions, a declaration of theft or loss of the license may be accepted if the issue date is sufficiently recent in terms of local legislation and if the local conditions are fulfilled (to be checked locally).
Is there a minimum / maximum age for renting a vehicle?
- The renter/driver must be 20 years old to rent/drive a passenger car.
- The renter/driver must be 23 years old to rent/drive a jeep or a luxury car.
- To rent/drive bigger vehicles which according to law requires extended driver license shall present appropriate and valid license at the start of rental.
If I am not the driver, can I book a vehicle and pay for it?
No, the main driver has to be the credit card holder who pays the booking as this will be specified on the rental agreement.
If I do not present my driving license, can I still take the vehicle?
No. The driving license is required for renting a vehicle.
If I want to rent a luxury or special vehicle, what documents do I need to present?
We may require two credit cards (at least one: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club) and request an authentication on each.
What is a Rental Agreement?
A formal contract, signed by Átak car rental and the renter at the time of check-out, which specifies the terms of the rental, and the rate applied.
When I pick up the car, can the staff explain the vehicle's controls to me?
Yes, feel free to ask our employee whatever you need to know about its main controls.
Do I need to check the condition of the vehicle before returning it?
Yes, if you observe any defect which is not listed on the rental agreement, you have to examine the vehicle with our employee.
Despite you do not suffer an accident, the vehicle might be damaged during the rental and this has to be communicated to our employee. On the contrary, if you suffer an accident during the rental you must declare it and give the documentation.
Can I prolong the rental period?
Yes, you may prolong (subject to vehicle availability and extra payment) at time of check-out or during the rental itself (conforming to our acceptance). Just contact or visit our nearest rental office. We may request a complementary authorization on your credit card.
Fines: Parking Tickets, Traffic Violations
The renter will be always responsible for any parking tickets and traffic violations and must pay them before returning the vehicle. If we receive any congestion charges or fines after the rental, those will be charged directly to the renter, including a surcharge for late payment, if any. A local administration fee applies: this will be charged in addition to the fines.
Do I need to return the car with a full tank?
We provide our vehicles with a full tank of fuel and you should return the vehicle in the same conditions. Otherwise, missing fuel will be charged to the renter at the end of the rental. Fuel is not included in our rates and we applied a refueling charge.
Lost items
In the event of losing any item, please call or contact us through this web page and we will make every effort to help you reclaim your lost item. Nevertheless, please note that we are not liable for items left in the vehicle at the end of the rental.
What payment methods are accepted when booking online?
At the time of booking we accept the main credit and debit cards: American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Visa. When making the reservation, you will be charged 15% of the total rental amount, having to pay the remaining 85% when picking up the vehicle.

What methods of payment are accepted by Átak car rental?
We accept main credit cards to the limits authorized by the credit card company: American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, and Visa. We do NOT accept debit cards. We also accept prepaid vouchers (with a specified value or the mention Group Days Apply) as means of payment of the rental charges, but you must present a credit card for the charges which have not been prepaid (extras, refueling charge deductibles in case of damage to or loss of the rented vehicle).
Can be the drop-off in a different office than the one where I rented it? How much does it cost?
Yes, just select the corresponding offices when you “start a quote” on the first page of our web site. Our webpage will instantly answer you if the route you have chosen is feasible and the corresponding price including the one way charge, if any.
What are the consequences if I return the vehicle to a different office without having booked the one-way?
You will be charged a higher rate.
Is it possible to return the vehicle outside the office opening hours?
Yes, but please ask if there is a key return box available at the check-in point.
CAUTION: Until our employee has checked the vehicle, you will remain responsible.
Can I make the payment at a certain office and rent the vehicle at a different one?
No. The renter must be authorized at the pick-up office with his own form of payment, valid driving license, passport and meet the minimum age requirements. The invoice is issued by the entity of the pick-up office.
What are the consequences if I return the car late?
Your rate will be calculated again, adding an extra day for each 24 hours you have held the car. Each 24 hour period started counts as a whole rental day. With the purpose of giving you more time, we offer you 1 hour grace period after the 24 hours are finished. Therefore, a rental of 24 hours and 60 minutes still counts as a one day rental.
IMPORTANT: Your insurances only cover you for the period specified on the Rental Agreement. Therefore, if you decide to return the car later than first planned, please visit the rental office (or call) to amend the Rental Agreement.
